Johan Lorbeer stood in mid- air, leaning against a wall with one hand, unhinging the laws of gravity.
Ten feet below, rush hour commuters at Madrid's Atocha railway station poured out from a packed train and froze in wonder. The next minute, they whipped out their camera cellphones, realising they were witnessing a physically impossible stunt.
Nonplussed by the scramble on the ground beneath his suspended feet, Lorbeer, a German street performer, presented a picture of composure: right hand tucked inside trouser pockets and the left hand resting against the wall.
Minutes ticked into hours. Lorbeer remained in this impossible position like a living work of art.
Elevated or reduced to the state of a sculpture, he interacted with the bewildered audience, whose appetite for communication rose as time went by, culminating in the wish to touch the artist in his superhuman appearance.
Lorbeer became famous in the past few years because of his ' still- life' feats; this one in Spain was named ' Tarzan: Standing still- life performance. His installations include ' Proletarian Mural' and ' Tarzan', which are famous in Germany.
Several of these performances feature Lorbeer in physically unfeasible stunts such as a street cleaner standing horizontally out from a wall high above the street or standing in mid- air, as he did in Cairo last November. He has performed at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt.
Awestruck admirers have exchanged thousands of blog posts among themselves on how the German pulls it off.
Images of Lorbeer are intriguing enough to make most viewers do a double take.
Sample one of the entries: "Demon spirits help levitate him to give the false illusion that he has some kind of power, just like in all cases of real levitation. What or who is he in league with? That's the question, or is he involved in any occult teachings?
Commentators have suggested that they have been manipulated in Photoshop. His images, though, are genuine.
